Job summary
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to join our research team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the Foundation's quantitative outputs, with a particular focus on the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) dataset. We are looking for a dedicated professional with a focus on public governance, data, and Africa, as well as substantial experience in quantitative research and analysis on development issues. The successful candidate will help lead core data initiatives within the research team, contribute to all research streams, as well as collaborate with relevant colleagues across teams to contribute to MIF’s overall priorities.

Specific responsibilities
• IIAG dataset generation: collect, organise, and curate datasets relevant to the Foundation’s research priorities.
• IIAG development: contribute to the continued evolution of the IIAG by ensuring a robust methodology, updating the framework, identifying and addressing data gaps, and incorporating new data sources.
• Data analysis and visualisation: perform advanced statistical analyses to extract actionable insights from data, produce clear and impactful charts, graphs, and infographics in collaboration with MIF design, communications and digital teams to support the dissemination of the data.
• Reports and dashboards: develop reports and interactive dashboards that transform complex data into actionable insights for diverse audiences.
• Automation and research methodologies: use programming languages to streamline and automate data collection and validation processes for the research team, stay up to date with the latest advancements in quantitative research methodologies to inform the Foundation's work.
• Research input: support the Foundation’s research team across multiple research streams, fostering collaboration and high-quality outputs.
• MIF-wide engagement: work with relevant colleagues across MIF teams – design, communications and digital – to support research dissemination, data visualisation, IIAG data portal development, and contribute to the overall priorities of the organisation.
Experience & qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
• A postgraduate degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of statistical methods, with a focus on political or social sciences.
• 3-4 years of work experience in a similar role involving data analysis or index calculation.
• A track record of presenting complex data findings to diverse audiences effectively.
Skills & competencies
The candidate must demonstrate:
Technical proficiency:
• Advanced knowledge of statistical software (e.g. Stata, R, SPSS).
• Proficiency in Python or other programming languages (e.g. SQL, JavaScript).
• Expertise in data visualisation tools such as Tableau.
• Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.
Analytical and communication skills:
• Ability to apply advanced research and statistical methods to complex datasets.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting key insights in an accessible format to diverse audiences.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
Organisational and interpersonal abilities:
• Highly organised, with the ability to manage deadlines under pressure.
• Quick learning capability and adaptability to new concepts and tools.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Readiness to work as part of a small team and a collaborative cross-team approach.
Language proficiency:
• Fluency in English is essential. Knowledge of French, Arabic or Portuguese is an advantage.
